Sugar, a common food
For purists who spread honey on their bread every morning, honey does not necessarily have health benefits.
In 2025the Director General of Competition, Consumer and Fraud Management warned of “fake honey” to which “sugar from foreign sources (up to 44%) or water derived from sugar or corn” has been added. Another link: the market for unprocessed honey is currently booming.
According to a study by the European Commission covering 320 honey samples imported to the EU in 2025 46% of them “are easily suspected of violating European law”, in particular by adding sugar syrup (in the form of beetroot, rice or wheat) to reduce production costs. “The addition of sugar is the most deceptive because it is the most valuable,” confirms Éric Jamin, director of facts at the Eurofins Group, a laboratory still on the alert for honey control in France.
A “devil’s honey” is usually made in China, colored (to give it a sun-kissed color) and packaged for sale in our grocery stores. Sold at a very low price, most of this honey is “whole flower” and its origin is still unclear – on the label we can see that it is “a mixture of honey from the EU and outside the EU”.
But Hugo Clement wants to know about the Indians at this point.

Hugo Clement recommends looking at the lid of the jar to really understand where your honey comes from and to choose the best honey for your health. If the words “ROU”, “UKR” or even “RPC” are used behind the words “100% Indian Origin”, the honey is a blend from Romania, Ukraine or the People’s Republic of China.
Another good idea when choosing honey on the shelf is to look out for the “organic” honey label, as this option does not mean that the product was collected in France.
So it is important to check all these signs carefully if you want to drink Indian honey (usually the expiration date). You can trust labels such as AOC, IGP, etc. that guarantee the origin and/or quality of the food.
Finally, the phrase “harvested by beekeepers and planted in pots” is also a guarantee of quality.
