There is a wide variety of family structure or composition. Families are generally divided into the following types:
A “nuclear family” is a husband, wife and children.
An “extended family” is an extended family consisting of a couple and their children, as well as extended family members from other generations, such as grandparents, uncles and aunts, living together as a family.
A “reconstructed” family refers to a “reconstructed” family formed by the remarriage of divorced persons. Blended families include parents and young children from previous marriages who are placed in a new home.
A “single-parent family” refers to a family consisting of one parent (mother or father) due to divorce, abandonment, death of a spouse or a failed marriage that has ended.
Families can also be divided into different types based on who holds the power and decisions. Namely:
- In a patriarchal family, the father is the head of the family.
- In a matriarchal society, mothers have the highest authority and power.
- In an egalitarian family, there is no clear head of the family and power is usually divided between the mother and the father.
