Love triangle: Study explains where love comes from

A study sheds light on ‘symbiosis’ or sex and romance for a couple

A new study has revealed a rare phenomenon in the world of sex: symbiosis. Rather, the power and strength that develops between members of a relationship.

What is ‘symbiosis’?
According to the research team led by Professor Sally Johnston, sexual attraction has always been thought of as an experience between two people. But this study suggests there may be a new way of understanding human agency, extending beyond the connection between two people to the power that is created by several people. Johnston said this trend had been seen in previous studies of polyamorous communities, particularly in the treatment of ‘unicorns’.

Science begins with ‘unicorns’
In polyamory jargon, the word ‘unicorn’ usually refers to a bisexual woman in a relationship with a heterosexual couple. In examining these changes, Johnston found that many people reported being attracted to the strengths of the couple and the energy they shared as partners, rather than to each other as individuals. This suggests that there are certain types of interests that are shared for social rather than individual purposes.

The dynamics of “symbiotic sex”
Studies have shown that “symbiotic” attraction is based on the perception of a “third force” that manifests itself in relationships. In other words, people are attracted not to the individuals in a pair, but to the union that is created between them.

Characteristics of “Symbiotes”
The study also found some characteristics of people who experience symbiotic sexual attraction. Participants described themselves as outgoing, needing more affiliation and attention, and less jealous than average.
