11 ways to reduce premature skin aging

Sunlight plays a major role in premature aging of our skin. Other things we do can also cause our skin to age faster than it should. To help patients prevent premature aging of their skin, dermatologists recommend the following:

Protect your skin from the sun every day.

Whether you spend your day at the beach or at work, sun protection is essential. You can protect your skin by seeking shade, wearing protective clothing (such as long-sleeved shirts, pants, wide-brimmed hats, and UV-blocking sunglasses), and using broad-spectrum, SPF 30 (or higher) and waterproof sunscreen. You should wear sunscreen every day on skin not covered by clothing. Choose clothing labeled with Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) for more effective protection.

Use self-tanning products instead of tanning.

Every time you tan, your skin ages prematurely. The same goes for getting your tan from the sun, tanning beds, or other home tanning products. These all emit harmful UV rays that cause skin to age.

If you smoke, please stop.

Smoking causes skin to age. It can cause wrinkles and a dull, sallow complexion. Don’t repeat the face. When you do a facelift, you contract the muscles below. If you contract the same muscles once and for many years, these lines can become permanent. Wearing sunglasses can help reduce wrinkles caused by squinting.

Be healthy, balanced.

Some studies show that eating fresh fruits and vegetables can help prevent damage that causes premature skin aging. Studies show that foods high in sugar or other refined carbohydrates can contribute to aging.

Drink less. Alcohol can irritate the skin. It dries out the skin and eventually damages it. This makes us look older.

Work out most days of the week.

Some studies show that moderate exercise can improve blood circulation and strengthen the body. This will make the skin look younger.

Wash the skin gently.

Rubbing your skin can be irritating. Irritating your skin will accelerate skin aging. Cleansing will help remove dirt, makeup, and other products that are not harmful to your skin.

Wash your face twice a day and after heavy sweating.

Sweating can irritate your skin, especially when wearing a hat, so wash your skin as soon as possible after sweating. Use a facial moisturizer every day. Moisturizers lock in moisture to help our skin look younger.

Avoid using skincare products that cause irritation or burning. If your skin burns or itches, it means your skin is irritated. Irritation can make your skin look older.
